How much more does a 23 in carry-on hold?

Maker capacities differ by roughly 5-17 L. Travelpro's 23 in bags hold 45-52 L; five at 22 in or shorter hold 35-40 L.

Airline rules decide fit. A capacity label cannot approve cabin dimensions.

How the comparison works

Your choices are compared with each model’s product details. A missing or conflicting value stays unknown and cannot satisfy a choice you select. The starting order helps you browse; it does not rate real-world performance.

Source dates appear with each link below. A source date does not confirm today's price or stock.

Compare the suitcase exterior with your booking allowance

Rolling cases through airports and assessing airline acceptance were outside this comparison of exterior measurements and package descriptions. Eagle Creek's international Expanse measures 21.5 in by 14 in by 8 in and weighs 2400 g empty. Its Tarmac measures 22 in by 14 in by 10 in and weighs 3400 g. Compare depth as well as the longest dimension: these cases take different amounts of space even though their lengths are close.

Measurements include wheels and handles at the unexpanded size. Capacity and fabric or shell descriptions help you compare packing choices, but neither ensures acceptance on your flight. Use the complete dimensions and packed weight against the allowance for your booking.

Travelpro's Platinum Elite variants have no settled weight or capacity figures here. Conflicting maker measurements remain unknown instead of being guessed.

Before you buy

Are these sizes with the bag expanded?

They're the unexpanded exterior measurements each maker gives, in the maker's own order. Both Optimas have Expandable in their names, so their expanded size is larger than these figures. The 46 L Maxlite 5 weighs 5.4 lb, close to the 35 L Expanse 2-Wheel's 5 lb 4 oz.

Is a hard shell heavier than fabric?

Not by much, going by the bags with a stated weight. Travelpro's polypropylene Optimas weigh 6.9 and 7.5 lb and Eagle Creek’s polycarbonate Tarmac and fabric Gear Warrior XE both have a 7 lb base weight with another 7 oz and 8 oz respectively, so the shell type alone won't tell you.

Why are the Platinum Elite weights blank?

Travelpro's spec list and its size-comparison panel give different weights and volumes for both, so we left those blank rather than pick one. They drop out once you set a weight limit, though their sizes and polycarbonate shells still show.

Which bag is the smallest outside?

Eagle Creek's Expanse 2-Wheel, at 21.5 x 14 x 8 in, which Eagle Creek sells as an International Carry-On. The deepest is the Tarmac at 10 in.
