Refractor or reflector: what telescope aperture is offered?

Celestron refractors span 70–102 mm aperture; Newtonian reflectors span 100–130 mm here. Their ranges overlap.

Tabletop models need a steady surface; choose aperture and mounting together.

How the comparison works

Your choices are compared with each model’s product details. A missing or conflicting value stays unknown and cannot satisfy a choice you select. The starting order helps you browse; it does not rate real-world performance.

Source dates appear with each link below. A source date does not confirm today's price or stock.

Aperture is a starting point for choosing an optical design

Celestron’s beginner selection covers apertures from 70 to 130 mm. Travel Scope is a refractor with a 70 mm aperture and 400 mm focal length; the Moon Mission tabletop Dobsonian is a Newtonian reflector with a 100 mm aperture and the same 400 mm focal length. Equal focal lengths therefore do not imply the same optical design.

Read the eyepiece bundle alongside aperture; these fields do not specify the magnification of the complete setup or how much detail you will see.

Choose controls and a support arrangement you can accommodate

Mount descriptions include Manual Alt-Azimuth, tabletop Dobsonian and equatorial designs. AstroMaster EQ entries differ from the tabletop StarSense Explorer models in how their mounts are described. Celestron’s optical and mount information is documented, but sky observations and setup trials were not performed. Across the selection, focal lengths span 400 to 1000 mm, but that range says nothing about assembled storage dimensions.

Consult the exact bundle’s accessory list, assembled size and operating instructions before buying. Never point a telescope at the Sun without the maker’s proper solar-safety equipment and instructions.

Before you buy

Is focal length the magnification I'll see?

Magnification also comes from the eyepiece, so the same scope can be used at quite different magnifications, and the supplied eyepieces aren't compared here. Focal length runs from 400 mm on the Moon Mission and Travel Scope 70 to 1,000 mm on the AstroMaster 114EQ and StarSense Explorer LT 114AZ. The reflectors, in this lineup. Celestron's five refractors run 70 to 102 mm, and its seven Newtonian reflectors 100 to 130 mm. Three of those reflectors, the Moon Mission and two StarSense Explorer Dobsonians, sit on tabletop bases, so you'll need a steady table or surface to stand them on.

Do the Smartphone App-Enabled models move on their own?

Don't read App-Enabled in the name as a promise of motorized tracking. The five StarSense Explorer models sit on manual alt-azimuth mounts or a tabletop Dobsonian base.

Why are there two alt-azimuth choices?

The labels keep Celestron's spelling, and each choice matches one spelling only: Manual Alt Azimuth covers the AstroMaster 70AZ and 102AZ, and Manual Alt-Azimuth covers five others. Altazimuth Tabletop Dobsonian base and Manual Tabletop Dobsonian split the same way, so leave mount open if you want to compare them all.
