Stud finders: does a signal approve drilling?

Choose stud-depth rating, locating style and battery type. Indication cannot approve drilling.

Wires, pipes and other objects affect readings. Use additional information and model instructions before penetrating walls; rated depth depends on wall material and conditions.

How the comparison works

Your choices are compared with each model’s product details. A missing or conflicting value stays unknown and cannot satisfy a choice you select. The starting order helps you browse; it does not rate real-world performance.

Source dates appear with each link below. A source date does not confirm today's price or stock.

Decide whether you want edges or a center indication

Zircon separates edge-only indications from models that indicate edges and center. StudSensor Center is in the latter group and uses the maker's Two AA battery description; other models use a 9V alkaline battery. Check the exact model's power needs rather than assuming the whole range takes the same battery.

The known maker maximum stud-depth figures run from 0.75 to 1.5 in. StudSensor Center carries the 1.5 in figure, but that number is a maximum for supported conditions, not an accuracy measurement on your wall.

Treat a stud indication as a clue before drilling

A detection result is not permission to penetrate the wall. Wires, pipes, moisture, wall materials and other objects can affect readings. The Zircon comparison transcribes maker depth and indication descriptions without scanning walls to measure accuracy.

Use the model's instructions and additional information to locate wiring, pipes and structural members before drilling. A deeper rating or center indication does not make those checks unnecessary. Choose the indication style you prefer, then treat safe drilling as a separate decision about the actual surface.

Before you buy

Can a finder confirm a safe drilling location?

No. Follow the model’s instructions and use other information to locate wiring, pipes and structural members before penetrating a surface.

Does the depth number measure accuracy?

It is the maker’s stated maximum stud-sensing depth in supported conditions. Wall materials, moisture and other conditions affect readings.
