Ferro rod or other ignition: what does a fire starter weigh?

Exotac’s nanoSTRIKER XL weighs 0.95 oz and uses ferrocerium; nanoSPARK weighs 0.5 oz and uses a flint wheel. You still need suitable tinder.

For less tool weight, nanoSPARK offers a different ignition mechanism.

How the comparison works

Your choices are compared with each model’s product details. A missing or conflicting value stays unknown and cannot satisfy a choice you select. The starting order helps you browse; it does not rate real-world performance.

Source dates appear with each link below. A source date does not confirm today's price or stock.

Choose a spark mechanism before trimming ounces

Exotac’s nanoSPARK uses a flint wheel and weighs 0.5 oz at 2.62 in long. Its nanoSTRIKER XL uses a ferrocerium rod and weighs 0.95 oz at 3.65 in long. These are complete-tool measurements, so they make a more useful packing comparison than a bare rod’s size.

The page compares reusable spark tools from maker descriptions, without igniting tinder ourselves. They need suitable tinder and are not fuel-burning lighters.

A larger tool still needs the right package components

Überleben’s Kräftig weighs 4.9 oz and is 7 in long; Exotac’s polySTRIKER XL weighs 1.4 oz and is 5.3 in long. Both use ferrocerium rods. A larger handle or tool does not provide a measured ignition-success comparison.

Read what the package supplies: rod, striker and tinder are separate components. A rod-only dimension cannot stand in for complete-tool length. Follow local fire restrictions and the maker’s handling instructions when using any spark source.

Before you buy

Does this compare burn time?

These reusable tools make sparks. Fuel blocks, tinder, matches and gas lighters are outside this comparison.

Why are some dimensions unknown?

Hexå does not supply an overall length. Leicht gives rod dimensions and a less-than-one-ounce weight claim, rather than exact complete-tool measurements. Those fields therefore remain unknown; rod size is not silently substituted for tool size.

Does every fire starter include a striker?

Inclusion varies by product. Check the manufacturer package contents before buying, especially if you need a separate striking tool or prepared tinder. Exotac’s nanoSTRIKER XL weighs 0.95 oz and uses ferrocerium; nanoSPARK weighs 0.5 oz and uses a flint wheel. You still need suitable tinder. For less tool weight, nanoSPARK offers a different ignition mechanism. Package contents matter: a rod, separate striker and tinder are separate components, and inclusion varies by product.
