How do sun hats trade front-brim depth against weight?

Bigger is not heavier here. Sunday Afternoons Sun Tripper has a 6 cm front brim at 73.7 g; Sport Hat has 10.3 cm at 62.4 g.

Sport Hat's UPF statement excludes mesh; sizing and exact rating wording matter.

How the comparison works

Your choices are compared with each model’s product details. A missing or conflicting value stays unknown and cannot satisfy a choice you select. The starting order helps you browse; it does not rate real-world performance.

Source dates appear with each link below. A source date does not confirm today's price or stock.

The mesh wording changes how you read the UPF claim

Sunday Afternoons gives Ultra Adventure Hat a UPF 50+ sun rating that includes mesh, while Sport Hat carries a UPF 50+ sun rating with mesh not rated. Preserve that distinction when choosing coverage; the shared number does not make the statements identical.

Charter Hat also has the mesh-inclusive statement. These are the maker's qualified ratings, rather than results from our own exposure measurements, and they do not promise an individual level of protection or a particular fit.

Front brim depth is not coverage around the whole hat

Front brims run from 6 cm to 11.5 cm and hat weights from 53.9 g to 121.9 g. Sun Tripper Cap has a 6 cm front brim at 73.7 g; Sundancer Hat has an 11.5 cm front brim at 82.2 g. Those measurements let you compare the front edge, not every side of the hat.

Adventure Hat's 9.8 cm front brim refers to the S/M size. Read the size and brim reference before extending a measurement to another option. Neck coverage and how the hat fits your head need their own consideration beyond front brim depth.

Before you buy

Does the sun-rating statement include mesh?

Sunday Afternoons distinguishes mesh exclusions from statements that include mesh. Ultra Adventure and Charter explicitly include mesh in their UPF 50+ statements; several other designs leave mesh unrated. Keep the qualifier with the hat’s sun-rating claim.

Does front-brim depth tell me how much shade I will get?

It describes one front measurement, rather than shade under every sun angle. The cap and hat designs also differ in side and rear coverage. Use the exact design’s shape and fit information with its qualified UPF statement.

Are all brim measurements from the same hat size?

Adventure Hat uses the maker’s S/M brim reference. A front-brim depth is separate from side or rear coverage and from head circumference; your selected size still needs its own sizing information.
